Renée Trenberth & Shaun Jay met through mutual friends in Hamilton. They got married on Saturday 14th July 2018 at The Boatshed in Karapiro.

We loved layout and design of the venue. It was clean and crisp, they already had up white Chinese lanterns and fairy lights so we didn’t have to do any decorating at all! It also overlooked Lake Karapiro which provided a beautiful backdrop during cocktail hour.

We knew we didn’t want a summer wedding because of the heat and the high costs. So we thought why not get married on our anniversary, it makes one less important date for us to remember, too!

We love pastel colours and flowers that are not over the top. I think that our florist really captured what we were after.

I thought I wanted something super simple and plain with long sleeves, but they all looked terrible on me. I ended up with something completely different that I was made to try on by my maid of honour and it was perfect and totally me. It was a Stella York gown. Sometimes our friends and family know us better than we know ourselves!

Bridesmaids were such an easy pick and pretty much the first thing we did. I couldn’t have imagined getting married without having my best friend of 20 years and two sisters by my side. Their dresses were blush and had flattering wrap detailing since my girls were at different life stages – teenage, student and mum.

Shaun and the groomsmen wore grey suits with white shirts from Hallensteins, brown shoes and belts as well as grey ties.

I love cake, but I didn’t love the prices of elaborate wedding cakes. We were struggling to decide on what flavours to do and how to cater to some of our gluten-free guests. So instead, we went for a small carrot cake (which was gluten-free for guests who needed it) and then we chose two different flavoured cupcakes – one each. My choice was Black Forrest and Shaun’s was Lemon Meringue. My Dad made us a large stand that we arranged the cupcakes on and the wedding cake was on top.

If you are on a budget, take time to categorise your spending into needs and nice haves. This will help you trim those unnecessary items that no one notices and prioritise things that are super important to you.
