With burgundy and olive tones, Rebecca Russell and Callum Day tied the knot in a wintry and intimate ceremony of love. They married on 11th of August 2018 in Hawke's Bay.

Callum and I met at the beginning of 2017. I had flown to New Zealand from Ireland to visit my sister and brother-in-law, who live in Palmerston North. We met during a group boating day where I happened to catch a ride on Callum’s jet boat. It was pretty instant – we knew there was something different about each other that we liked. We went on a date the next night once Callum had plucked up the courage to ask me out – and the rest is history!

We tied the knot in Hawke’s Bay. Our ceremony was held at Black Barn Vineyard’s Olive Shed with a reception was in the Black Barn Bistro. I’ve always liked the thought of a cosy, intimate winter wedding and August was the earliest my family could fly out from Ireland, so it worked out wonderfully. The Olive Shed also offered a rustic atmosphere, with plenty of natural light. To tie in to the wintry feel, we chose a colour palette of warm, deep burgundy, with gold and dark greens.

We designed and made all of the wedding décor. The photo booth wall was a real family effort. We also created the seating plan, welcome sign and all of the stationery. As a nod to my Northern Irish heritage, we made Irish fudge as guest favours – my mother-in-law and I made it, my sisters made up the jars, Dad filled them and, well, Callum was the taste tester!

Toni from Magdalen Hill was our florist and we couldn’t have wished for a nicer team. We wanted the flowers to be a main feature of the wedding décor. I love eucalyptus and olive leaves, so had foliage along the tables and around the door in the Olive Shed. Toni showed us a statement piece of hanging foliage from I Do Glamour, which we thought was amazing. When we walked into the reception, it caught my eye immediately. The team went above and beyond, adding extra flowers and arrangements where we hadn’t expected. We were incredibly lucky.

My dad found my dress. Funnily enough he got on to Google and found Forever Bridal in Belfast, where I was to discover my dream dress. It took an hour to drive out there, but it was the second gown I tried on and we all knew it was perfect. It was a mermaid style, with a sweetheart neckline, embroidered lace with shoestring straps. It originally had a cathedral-length train, but I had it altered to be more manageable and understated. I accessorised with a veil that had diamanté edging and wore metallic Carvela heels and teardrop earrings.

I had three bridesmaids – my two sisters and my best friend, who all flew over from Northern Ireland. They wore floor-length burgundy Dessy gowns with a slit up the side. I wanted them to have dresses that they could wear again. Callum and his three groomsmen wore navy suits from Rembrandt and to help differentiate him from the guys, he wore a waistcoat.

We opted for a three-course sit-down menu. Callum and I both have a sweet tooth and, not being able to decide on just a couple of flavours for our cake, we chose four! Created by Pretty Little Details Co, there was a black forest, chocolate and caramel mud cake, sticky date cake, and the top tier was a raspberry and white chocolate mud cake, all finished with a skim of Swiss buttercream and adorned with gold leaf detail.

My brother-in-law is a natural entertainer, so it was an easy decision to have him in charge of the Irish games and music. Everyone got involved with the dancing, and it helped people mix and mingle.

Hands down the most memorable part of the day was standing at the altar together saying our vows and making the commitment to cherish each other for the rest of our lives. It was truly perfect!
