Four years after we began dating, we were about to leave the house to catch a flight to Wellington for an Elton John concert. We were getting our daughter Ziggy ready, when Andrew suddenly dropped down on one knee. It was such a surprise and so wonderful that he was able to involve our daughter in the proposal too – it still makes me giggle thinking about it.

We had an early summer wedding in Christchurch, just before Christmas. Hearing O Come, All Ye Faithful sung during our ceremony in Christ’s College Chapel by all our guests was incredible and so festive, which we loved. While reception-venue hunting we walked into the Great Hall and were blown away by its stained-glass windows, arched ceiling and comforting fireplace; no other venue could compare.

We wanted the wedding to be authentic to us and we couldn’t have pulled it off without our talented wedding planner Emma Newman and stylist Hayley of Hayley & Co. To style the space, the stage and fireplace were adorned with foliage in dark, waxy greens.

Our 150 guests dined under leafy structures, placed on three long tables with pockets of bright flowers mixed throughout to complement the smaller arrangements. Created by the talented team at Sweetpea Weddings, they featured seasonal favourites such as peonies, dahlias and garden roses in blush and ruby tones. We set the tables with rustic jute placemats, natural linen, gold cutlery and menus by Crafted by Hilary Barron, designed with white text printed on a charcoal coloured card.

I was after a vintage feel for my gown and knew Louise Anderson would be the ideal designer to custom-make it. In a blush hue, it had a tulle overlay, embroidered with silver beaded French lace and Indian diamanté strands, finished with capped sleeves for a feminine feel. I accessorised with Kirsten Ash jewellery, a veil and an old, but much loved pair of nude Miu Miu heels. My sister Pip was my bridesmaid and wore a lovely vintage satin top and flowing skirt in dusty blue from Victor Bridesmaid.

The music was an absolute hit! We hired a wonderful Spanish guitarist and a band called Purée who had all of our guests up and dancing. The day felt authentic and every guest brought their own natural spark. Spirits were high and the party was an absolute banger.
