Insider Secrets: Abbeville Estate

New Zealand Weddings magazine got an insider’s guide to Auckland’s stunning Abbeville Estate, location of our Dream Wedding, from Sue Fleischl of The Great Catering Company.

What is the history behind Abbeville Estate?

Abbeville Estate is comprised of heritage-listed buildings that are over 150 years old. It includes The Homestead, The Barn and Westney Church. Surrounded by landscaped grounds, Abbeville is an ideal venue for beautiful bespoke weddings.

What are the advantages of marrying at Abbeville Estate?

Abbeville offers a one-stop shop for your wedding day. The church is perfect for wet weather or you could get married under our beautiful big Puriri tree. The barn is perfect for photos and dancing, and on beautiful summer evenings you can be outside in the courtyard or on the lawn.

What kind of wedding packages do you offer?

Abbeville has a buffet, plated and cocktail/bowl food package. We can customize these and work with you to accommodate your budget and tastes.

How much time do you recommend a couple puts aside for photographs in between the ceremony and reception?

It’s always nice to have a group photo after the ceremony and I recommend your celebrant tells everyone this beforehand (while waiting for the bride to arrive) so they know it’s going to happen. It will help keep timings together and stop guests wandering off.

Try to keep your photos less than 1.5 hours. Your guests will be wanting to eat and to see you!

How soon after a couple becomes engaged should they book their venue?

Venues book out quickly. We have bookings 2 years ahead. So book now!

What are three key things to check before sealing the deal on your venue?

    • Check for any extra costs, get a detailed quote. Does the venue have its own kitchen and equipment at no extra cost? (Some venues will charge extra after a certain number of hours.)
    • Check how long you can have the venue. Can you decorate in the morning at no extra cost? Can you get ready on site? Is there a close-down time?
    • Is the venue “user friendly”? Can you bring some of your own alcohol? Are there beautiful spaces to have your photos? Are there wet weather options? Can you decorate the tables yourself?

What are some unique things you’ve seen couples do recently that made for amazing wedding images?

    • Making the most of fairy lights, festoon lights and lanterns to create beautiful, magical photos
    • Lots of colourful flowers in pretty little jars wrapped with fabric and ribbons
    • Sweet tables with pretty stands, lollies and dainty cakes
    • Pretty terracotta pots with flowers that have been grown by the bride and groom for guests to take home

If you’re marrying outdoors, what is a ‘must’ when preparing for photos?

Check with your photographer where the sun will be. We don’t want a squinting bride for the most important part of your ceremony.

Check what could be in the photos in the distance – a car park or ugly building may ruin a beautiful shot.

What if the weather turns rough?

Always have a wet weather option. At Abbeville we have the barn, church and homestead to keep the photos beautiful and interesting.

Any advice for brides to be?

Don’t try to do too much on the week of your wedding. Most brides have a lot of family and friends arriving in the days beforehand, all of whom will want a bit of your time. Pace yourself and don’t take on too many social engagements.
